Бороться до взаимного истребления, бороться не на жизнь, а на смерть. Есть, по крайней мере, две версии происхождения этого выражения. По одной версии, это выражение может быть связано с ожесточённой борьбой между ирландскими городами Kilkenny и Irishtown, продолжавшейся до конца XVII в., которая привела к их взаимному разорению. Во второй, более колоритной версии, рассказывается о том, как в 1798 г. солдаты в Kilkenny развлекались, связав хвосты двух кошек и бросив их поперёк верёвки для белья. При появлении офицера солдаты быстро отрезали хвосты кошкам, и те удрали. Когда офицер потребовал объяснить появление двух отрезанных хвостов, ему сказали, что кошки дрались и съели друг друга, не оставив ничего, кроме хвостов. Многие считают эту историю типично ирландской.
